Imphal: The Chief Minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, made an announcement on Saturday stating that the internet ban in the state has been lifted with effect. The government had imposed restrictions on internet services in districts of the conflict-ridden state since May 3 due to clashes. Gradually they had eased the ban by allowing services under conditions.
Singh explained that the initial reason for implementing the internet ban was to prevent rumours, videos, photos and messages that could potentially disrupt law and order. However, starting today, there will no longer be an internet ban.
This development comes after the government’s recent appeal for individuals and groups across the state to voluntarily surrender any weapons within a 15-day period starting from September 22.
In a statement released on Friday evening, the government expressed its willingness to consider accepting weapons during this timeframe. However, once the 15-day period is over, both central and state security forces will launch a search operation throughout the state to recover any remaining weapons. Those involved with weapons will face legal consequences.
The ongoing conflict between groups in Manipur has led to the tragic loss of 175 lives, with over 1,100 people sustaining injuries. Additionally thousands have been forced to leave their homes due, to the crisis. The situation has seen a number of incidents involving arson resulting in the destruction of 4,786 houses and 386 religious sites.
