It is a major leap towards the establishment of peace and control of illegal arms in Manipur, at least 328 firearms and more than 10,600 rounds of ammunition have been recovered by the security forces in search operations coordinated in five valley districts, Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching. The joint operation, undertaken on the intervening night of June 13 and 14, 2025, involved the Manipur Police, Indian Army, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and the Assam Rifles.
The operation was conducted on specific intelligence inputs that those districts have some hidden weapon caches in the outskirts, according to a statement issued by the Manipur Police on Saturday. The cache of weapons seized has a huge variety of high-powered weapons: 151 self loading rifles (SLRs), 65 INSAS rifles, 73 assorted rifles, 12 light machine guns (LMGs), six AK series rifles, five carbine guns, two MP5 guns, two Amogh rifles, one AR-15 rifle, six pistols, two flare guns, one mortar, and two barrels.
The security forces also found over 10,600 rounds of live ammunition. This comprised 3,534 SLR rounds, 2,186 INSAS rounds, 2,252 .303 rounds, 407 Amogh rounds, 234 AK rounds, and 20 rounds of 9 mm ammunition. Other materials arrested were 591 different magazines, 10 hand grenades, three lathodes, seven detonators, and three para rounds.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Lhari Dorjee Lhatoo once again assured that the police force would do whatever it takes to ensure that law and order is maintained and asked the citizens to be watchful of any suspicious movements and illegal possession of arms. The surgery is one of a series of crackdowns conducted recently against the circulation of illegal weapons in the region, which has been aggravated due to the tension created after five Arambai Tengol volunteers, including its key leader Asem Kanan, were arrested by a CBI team at Imphal Bir Tikendrajit International Airport on June 8.
