Imphal: During the ongoing Assembly session on Friday, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said that the government would leave no stone unturned to probe the recent incidents of landmine blasts in the Kamjong district of the state near the Indo-Myanmar border. Singh’s commitment arrived in the wake of a calling attention motion moved by Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing under the 6th Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Keishing pointed to the regular blast that mostly happened between border pillars number 91 and 94, where many were killed. He pointed out that with these blasts having been severe, residents have been known to be injured or killed as a result. Keishing submitted a report wherein he said that two men riding a motorcycle, namely Primichungren Bohrong and Liansulingsuam, were engaged in a landmine blast incident near Namlee, along the Namlee-Mansa road, which bisects Myanmar. In Z Choro village, another person was injured, and two others were injured near Wanglee on the 22nd of May. The violence rose to a new level on July 25 this year when Wanglee Market was hit by a landmine blast that killed one person, injured two others seriously, and killed another one in another incident.

Leishiyo also claimed that Myanmar militants were behind the placement of these landmines to make residents of the border region live in fear. He even accused the Assam Rifles, a border guarding force, of undertaking civil functions, such as customs and forest departments.

In response, Chief Minister Singh said that an investigative team would be constituted, which would consist of the Assam Rifles, local forces, and the CID. The team will be required to investigate as to who placed them and why these landmines were laid. He promised that the report would be detailed and forwarded to the ministries such as the Ministry of External Affairs. He also stated that he would personally insert himself into communicating with the Ministry of Natural Resources, asserting that decisive action should be taken immediately to reduce the fear and insecurity endured by the local people.
