A senior MLA from the BJP in Manipur says there are 44 MLAs set to form a new government now that President’s Rule has been imposed after the resignation of N. Biren Singh. After a meeting with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, MLAs announced the proposal.

According to Thokchom Radheshyam Singh, a member of the Manipur assembly, the ten MLAs in the group are eight BJP members, one from NPP, and one who is independent. We told the Governor that we enjoy the support of 44 MLAs. We too, talked about ways to address the challenges the state faces.” He said that Speaker Satyabrata had talked with all MLAs, individually and as a group, to verify that they supported the candidate.

Showing the Governor we are ready for the job is, in effect, claiming we will form the next government. However, who becomes the candidate is ultimately decided by the BJP’s central committee, according to Singh. He further mentioned that political stability is important since the people of Manipur have already waited long enough. The past two years saw the government halted by COVID-19, and the last two have been swept by ethnic clashes.

60 assembly seats are available in Manipur, and a majority belong to the BJP-led coalition. Nine Meitei MLAs are part of this, as well as three from the Manipuri Muslim community and nine Naga MLAs. Five MLAs each in the Congress and Kuki-Zo parties represent the assembly, while the Congress holds five Meitei seats, and the rest are held by Kuki-Zo MLAs.

A game of power between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei people caused turmoil in the state in May 2023. Many people have died, and thousands have been displaced, pushing Manipur into one of its greatest crises in recent decades.
