West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged the central agencies of trying to defame people by way of deliberate efforts, and requested the Chief Justice of India to protect the Constitution, democracy and judicial independence. Her commentary was in the context of recent raids of the Salt Lake office of political consultancy firm I-PAC by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) which she alleged were directed at her party and to confiscate internal documents.
Mamata Banerjee stated the same remarks when he was addressing the opening of the new Circuit Bench building of the Calcutta High Court at Jalpaiguri. The Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant and Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court attended the event. Banerjee took a swipe at the Centre (without naming the BJP) particularly as political temperatures increase before the next West Bengal Assembly elections.
Speaking to the meeting, the chief minister called on the judiciary to be proactive in defending values of the constitution. She addressed judges to provide democracy, Constitution and federal set up of the country security, lest the country heads into a disaster should institutions be watered down. Banerjee, too, sounded an alert on what she termed as a tendency to the rise of media trials and in this case she opines that there is a tendency to hear cases that have not been decided in the courts at all.
She claimed that there is misuse of investigative agencies to slander people and intimidate them. Bayer stating how she believed in the judiciary, Banerjee touched on the fact that the courts are the highest guardian of democracy and constitutional rights as practiced by the people. Nothing exists above the judiciary, she said, and citizens are placed under its watch.
Her remarks echoed likes of the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that has repeatedly demanded the democratic institutions to be safeguarded, accusing the ruling party and constitutional structures of sabotaging the electoral integrity, which has been refuted by both.
