West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should resign, said the senior BJP leader Amit Malviya, saying that her administration has failed to do away with the violence in Murshidabad. Malviya’s remarks came in response to Banerjee’s claims that the BJP and RSS were behind a “vicious false campaign” related to the violence in the region.
On April 11 to 12, the Murshidabad violence took place, and Banerjee has maintained that the violence was orchestrated by outside forces. Despite this, Malviya said that the Chief Minister’s claims went against the state police’s official statement. Malviya also says that Banerjee’s narrative that violence happened due to external forces had not had police backing, which only strengthened her position.
In an open letter released on Saturday evening, Mamata Banerjee urged the public to maintain peace, stating that “these forces” (BJP and RSS) were using the incident as an opportunity to divide the state. She also expressed her frustration at the growing aggressiveness of the BJP and its allies like the RSS in the region. She had in the open letter previously not used the RSS’s name but she had no choice.
Banerjee accused the BJP and RSS of initiating a “vicious false campaign,” which, according to her, was intended to stir trouble and disrupt the state’s unity. It was learnt in response that Malviya sharply criticised the Chief Minister for using her official position and circulating letterhead on her, to pass the buck to the opposition. He also said that instead of taking responsibility for the shortcomings in her administration, Banerjee was unjustifiably blaming it on the BJP and RSS for the violence.
However, reacting to Banerjee’s response, Malviya said Banerjee’s reply has been a clear effort to divert responsibilities. Banerjee was asked to relinquish by him because she could not stop the violence or use the opportunity to alter facts regarding the situation.
