On Thursday morning, a general compartment of the Shalimar -Sambalpur Mahima Gosain Express derailed near Sambalpur railway station in Odisha, but luckily, there have been no reported deaths or injuries. According to an official statement made by the East Coast Railway, the incident you have just visited was between Sambalpur City station and Sambalpur Junction soon after the train left at 9:18 a.m.
Officials stated that during the derailment, the locomotive was going at very low velocity, which prevented the occurrence of a serious accident. The rear trolley of a general coach, right on the heels of the guard van of the train number 20831, got out on the track as the train even remained within the city. According to the guard on board, the low speed of the locomotive was a very important factor in avoiding serious accident or loss of life.
The railway authorities and the local police quickly ran to the scene straight after the incident. Occupants of the affected coach were moved safely to another compartment and the train proceeded later on to Sambalpur. Senior officials such as Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) reached the scene and oversaw restoration works, and minimised the disturbance of rail traffic.
The East Coast Railway confirmed that there were no damages to property and all passengers had no hassle. Restorative operations immediately started as part of the measures to get the coach back on track and clear the line so that smooth operations could be made possible.
This is a clear indication that frequent checks of safety and emergency response systems are needed in the railway system. Although investigations are still going on to identify the specific causes of the derailment, authorities have applauded the measure taken by the crew at the right time to handle the emergency case and to preserve the lives of the passengers without causing panics.
