In an important anti-terrorism move, Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested twelve people during early morning raids in Thane this week, suspected of being tied to the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). Police from Thane Rural district came to help, and they started their search around 4 am at Padgha and Borivali, both near Mumbai.

Authorities said that the ATS carried out searches at close to 2 dozen locations, which included the homes of past office-bearers and members of SIMI. Saquib Nachan, Aaquib Saquib Nachan, Abdul Latif Kaskar, Kaif Nachan, and Shajil Nachan are examples of people whose homes were searched as part of the investigation. They have avoided public attention because of their former associations with the banned organization.

During the search, police found Farak Zubair Mulla’s house, a land broker and ex-SIMI member’s residence. Authorities discovered that Mulla had just gotten back from performing Hajj in Saudi Arabia. Hasib Zubair Mulla, Abu Jundal’s older brother, has a history of crimes related to the 2002 and 2003 Mumbai train bombings. After finishing a 10-year jail term, Hasib is now being held in the Delhi prison with Saquib Nachan, as both are linked to an ISIS module case.

Saraswati Police also raided the home of Abdul Latif Kaskar, who supposedly helps Farhan Suse at a godown and is a close associate of Farhan, who has been tied to ISIS.

Raids uncovered that six people were not at their residences when the searches occurred. Questioning the suspects took hours before 12 people were led to the Padgha Police Station for more questioning. The case is being investigated further, and officials have not given out any specific details as yet.
