Bhopal: Minister Vijay Shah from Madhya Pradesh is dealing with more legal issues because of a controversial statement he made about Colonel Sophia Qureshi. Thanks to the action of the Supreme Court, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) will soon serve a summons to Shah for questioning.

The controversy grew from the time Vijay Shah addressed a public event in Mhow on May 12. He shared this sentiment during his speech, “Their people were stripped and our retaliation came when we sent her community’s sister (Sophia Qureshi) to punish them.” He also stated, “The terrorists declared, We told Modi that we stripped Hindus. So, Modi arranged for his own sister to land in Pakistan on an aircraft from the Indian army, to give them something to think about.” Many people immediately became outraged by these comments all across Madhya Pradesh and India.

Following suo motu action, the High Court directed that an FIR be filed within four hours after the incident had happened. Because of this, a case was lodged at Manpur police station under several major provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), referencing Sections 152, 196(1)(b), and 197(1)(c).

Not agreeing with the High Court’s ruling, Vijay Shah petitioned the Supreme Court. Thus, his plea was rejected by the Supreme Court, which also expressed disapproval of his conduct by ordering the creation of a Special Investigation Team on May 19. Its members are an IPS officer, an IG named Sagar Pramod Verma, a DIG called Kalyan Chakravarty, and an SP named Wahini Singh.

The SIT has shared a first report and still needs to interview Vijay Shah. A copy of the video has been sent to CFSL (Central Forensic Science Laboratory) for a forensic examination. The following hearing in the case is planned for July 1st, and the SIT is asking for an extension to finish its work.
