Bhopal: It might be possible to conduct the student union elections in colleges and universities across Madhya Pradesh this year after a lapse of 7 years. The Department Of Higher Education has now begun to formulate the guidelines for the academic year 2024-25. These elections are, therefore, possible to happen, particularly because the proposal was made by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav when he was the Minister of Higher Education. He had also sent a proposal to the then Chief Minister. However, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has addressed this current chief minister and urged them to conduct students’ central association and vice-president elections through the direct electoral system.

No student union elections have been held in Madhya Pradesh for the last three years in the academic year 2017. Preparations for these elections with the ending of the Lok Sabha election code of conduct might start in universities and colleges. The Department of Higher Education is also preparing an election schedule of 15 days.

However, in the direct electoral system, counting, every student of a university or college has the right to an independent ballot and vote for the president of his or her choice. Indirectly, they vote and choose a class representative who, in turn, will be the one to vote for the president. This system has not been used for the past few years since many violence and disturbances were experienced during pollution. But the prospect of conducting student union elections in Madhya Pradesh has once again shown a great rise at least in the present case.

Many opt for direct elections, as it provides each student a direct vote to get his/her representative. This method is considered decentralized and less selective in its approach, thus allowing students within the school to be involved more enthusiastically. The above system is also democratic, but the decision-making is confined to only elected student leaders, which may sometimes cause complaints amongst the general populace of students.
