Bhind: Rice mill smoke is causing serious problems for the people of a village situated in the Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh. Black dust said to emanate from the mill has been blamed for polluting drinking water and food sources by the residents, leading to most of them falling ill. They are most worried by respiratory ailments that result from the smoke, especially children who find it difficult to breathe due to the feeling of suffocation.
This problem is prevalent in Mata ka Pura, a 1,500 inhabited small town in the Gohad Assembly area in the vicinity of flood no. 17 around the location of a rice mill. The inhabitants of the area complained that the thick smoke emitted by the mill reduced the quality of air, causing breathing difficulties. Currently, children are suffering from the effects of this pollution, and many people are getting sick. For some, this has even meant loss of life based on it.
The villagers said that they had complained to the Gohad Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) recently, asking for some necessary action to be taken. Namely, the villagers stated that the black dust which emanates from the mill is not only in the air but also on the surfaces inside their homes. It spreads in the water that is stored at their homes and contaminates the food that they eat at the dining table. The dust also builds up on their noses and mouths as they slumber; going about their daily lives becomes a living nightmare.
The villagers consulted their doctors, and the doctors epitomized the villagers’ fears that the smoke from the rice mill was the cause of the increased health complications. Problems stated here include black smoke as well as dust particles that cause respiratory sickness, so there are increasing numbers of sick people in the village. Due to this, the villagers are appealing to the authorities to act with speed in order to check pollution and their health deterioration.
