On Monday, there was a grand celebration of the world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain as the doors of the sanctum were opened at 4 a.m. on the auspicious day of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha Navami. This day started with a religious rite during which Lord Mahakal was first bathed with clean water. It was then succeeded by the conventional Panchamrit Abhishek, which is undertaken using milk, curd, ghee, honey, and fruit juices and is symbolic of devotion and purity.
Lord Mahakaleshwar had been made divine with an Abhishek (decoration). Sacred Bhasma (holy ash) was given, which is particularly spiritually important in the tradition of Ujjain. The Mahakal idol had been adorned with beautiful ornaments, such as a silver crown of Sheshnag, a silver Mundmala (garland of heads), and a Rudraksha mala. Newly made flower garlands were also provided, which further increased the divine aspect of the god. After this ritual of devotion, a grand bhog of fruits and sweets was dedicated to Baba Mahakal.
The temple reverberated with the chanting of Baba Mahakal ki Jai as hundreds of worshippers assembled in the early mornings of the day to observe the most renowned ceremony in Hinduism, the Bhasma Aarti. The air was full of piety, faith, and spirituality as individuals bowed down to the floor in reverence.
Nandi Maharaj, the holy bull of Lord Shiva, had many followers who whispered their wishes to his ear and believed that Nandi transmits their wishes to Mahakal.
Divine vibrations pervaded the whole complex of temples; the perfume of flowers, the sound of bells, and the chants of worshipers made the atmosphere highly spiritual. The early morning darshan was more of a ritual than a blessing to the faithful, but it was also a spiritual experience of a lifetime, which brought peace, blessings, and fulfillment.
