Sagar: A very bad incident could have happened in Sagar of Madhya Pradesh when a van carrying school children rolled off the roadway into a drain. Fortunately, no one was lost in the incident, though several children sustained injuries. This was a sad incident that happened at about 8:00 AM in the morning, specifically in the vicinity of the private bus stage. The van was ferrying over half a dozen St. Joseph’s Convent Higher Secondary School students, Katol. The head and facial injuries sustained by some of the children included deep gashes on the skin, broken jaws and cracked skulls.
When they were asked, some eyewitnesses said that the van came from the slope near the Anand Shri Hotel, crossed the road, hit an open drain and that all four wheels were pointing upwards. As soon as the van rolled over, people lunged forward and shouted, help! Some individuals going into a nearby paan shop heard the commotion, quickly came running, and, by force, extricated the children from the van. With the assistance of sweethearts, the van was fixed to stand on the wheels once again. The van driver who was involved in the accident stated that the accident resulted from the brakes’ malfunctioning.
When the parents got the news of the accident in their neighbourhood, they rushed to the scene and removed the kids to the hospital. From the police record, it was established that all the children involved in the pedestrian were the inhabitants of Shanichari, Shukravari, Tilakganj and Krishnan wards.
The timely intervention of the bystanders and the parents ensured that the situation did not turn out worse. First responders and ambulance services were notified, and the injured kids were treated accordingly. Local police and transport ministers have already opened an inquiry to establish the reasons for the break failure and to prevent similar accidents in the future.
