One of the biggest scams has been unearthed in the School Education Department in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. After the fraud was exposed, the department has stripped accountant Vijay Kumar Bhalavi of his job. The fake names were added to the list of teachers which came into focus when it was found that the list under the office of BEO Panaagar had had the inclusion of fake names as a result of which crores of rupees could be withdrawn over a period of time.
The preliminary report indicates that the accountant was supposed to have been embezzling money through the preparation and utilization of salary accounts of fictitious teachers. These counterfeit accounts were long-term and were operated over a long duration, where salaries were being withdrawn on a regular basis. This malpractice does not only implicate the School Education Department but it also puts the District Treasury in the spotlight since it was not able to unravel the irregularities over the years.
One of the special investigation teams reviewed the departmental records and discovered that crores of rupee were being transferred illegally since 2016. The fraud came into the limelight when the figures maintained by the department were not equal to the transaction details of the treasury. This misfit caused internal investigations, which results in the fraud being discovered.
After a complain was filed, the department leaped to action and suspended accountant Vijay Kumar Bhalavi awaiting investigation. The district administration has not ignored the issue and the Collector has commissioned an inquiry. The inquiry will focus on the way these massive embezzlements went on almost ten years without being noticed, who were also part of it, and whether the anomalies were ignored by the treasury department officials or by negligence.
The investigation unfolds, and hopefully, more information will be uncovered regarding the network of fraudulent educators, the means of money laundering, and systemic lapses allowed the fraud to be perpetuated.
