Bhopal: Cases of theft are always associated with passenger transport by train. Right from a lady whose luggage was stolen to passengers, particularly ladies who go missing and unaccounted for, are some of the incidences that have forced railways to take drastic measures. Regarding security steps targeting passenger safety, CCTV cameras will be installed in 38 thousand train coaches and railway. It is designed to address the issues related to theft and the security of travellers’ property.

The plan to install CCTV cameras will start with the train’ coaches under the West Central Railway. These well-known trains are Shatabdi Express, Humsafar Express, and Vande Bharat Express. At this juncture, about 1000 CCTV cameras are installed in 29 stations falling under the West Central Railway, including Bhopal. However, this new move now takes surveillance to the interior of the train coaches.

CCTV cameras are believed to discourage thieves and anti-social elements, thus making the passengers more secure during the journey. Thus, by maintaining a strict vigil on the activities taking place inside the coaches, railway authorities will be able to minimize the cases of theft and provide passengers with a safer journey.

The general public has something to anticipate and expect from the project because passengers will be able to travel with relatively more security in their possessions. The railways’ decision can be regarded as a preventive measure aimed at responding to passengers’ demands and improving safety for the most vulnerable population groups. This is one of the projects under the improvement and modernization programs of the Indian Railways to enhance the service delivery for millions of passengers who use rail transport frequently.

By installing and using this system, the railways expect to contain cases of theft, whereas any suspicious case is to be captured and tackled in the shortest time possible to ensure the passengers travelling have a smooth and safe ride.
