Makar Sankranti, celebrated with fervor across the nation, witnesses soaring demand for a variety of vibrant kites. In the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, a myriad of colorful kites, especially those featuring PM Modi and Chhota Bheem, are creating a craze. Despite the ban on Chinese manjha, sellers have embraced indigenous alternatives, turning away from the controversial Chinese string.
Iqbal Khan, a kite merchant, revealed that diverse and colorful kites flooded the market this year. Notably, kites featuring PM Modi and Yoga Guru Swami Ramdev are in high demand, showcasing a unique trend. The enthusiasm for kite flying is palpable among people, with traditional Indian manjha gaining popularity alongside the trend. Chinese manjha has notably disappeared from the entire market due to the ban.
This Makar Sankranti holds significant cultural and mythological importance. According to mythology, on this day, the Sun God visits his son, Lord Shani, at his home. Since Shani is the ruler of the zodiac sign Makar (Capricorn), the festival is named Makar Sankranti. It is also believed that on this day, Lord Vishnu beheaded a demon, liberating the Earth’s inhabitants from their fears. His act is commemorated by burying his head on the Mandara Parvat (Mandara Mountain). Makar Sankranti is not only a celestial event but also marks the onset of a new season.
The celebration transcends cultural and regional boundaries, bringing people together to revel in the joy of kite flying and festive cheer. The transition to indigenous manjha reflects not only a shift in market dynamics but also a commitment to eco-friendly alternatives. As Makar Sankranti unfolds, the skies are painted with a kaleidoscope of kites, symbolizing the vibrant spirit of the festival.
