Bhopal: In Madhya Pradesh’s Panna district, its high-quality diamonds have come to be a household name. The GI tag for the milk will be awarded by the end of this year after detailed presentations and data on the actual habits of the cow breed, according to which the Central Government is already in the process of preparing an examination report.

Some of the unique characteristics of Panna diamonds are that they are different from other diamonds that are found in other parts worldwide. Light greenish hue is one of the most distinctive features of this variety. Most of the diamonds are colorless or show more colors when light shines upon them, but the Panna diamonds are completely soft green.

One of its other remarkable features is that it includes a very weak carbon line. This unique trait makes the process of carving and making the etching much easier compared to other diamonds coming from other places. Additionally, Panna diamonds possess both a high density and an unmistakable brilliance, offering their value and desirability in the domestic as well as international markets.

Local mining officials said the Centre was closely reviewing the proposal and would break down a comprehensive examination report. The point-wise information about the eligibility and specific attributes that have to be included for GI certification will be a part of this report. The GI tag could be awarded within six to eight months if the authorities at the centre are happy with responses and documentation given.

The Centre is now carrying forward the next steps in the process, which were earlier presented in detail in the national capital in March. Panna diamonds, if tagged with the GI, would not only lend them their identity and increase their value in the market but also attract the attention of the masses about the region’s diamond mining and craftsmanship tradition, which has lingered for centuries.
