A special road that links Jabalpur, the Sanskariadhani of Madhya Pradesh, to the state capital Bhopal has become not only a sightseeing place but also an embodiment of security. The new road is on the National Highway-45, and it is affectionately known to people and travelers as the Red Carpet Road.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is the source of the innovation and it has implemented Table Top Red Marking technology in this route which is the first of its kind in India. The specially planned area runs near the Veerangana Rani Durgavati Tiger Reserve which was once called the Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary. The forested area houses tigers, leopards, deer, sambhar and other wild animals which cross the highway very often and thus the area is very prone to accidents. It used to be considered as a great black spot previously because of the frequent road accidents happening between vehicles and animals.
In order to overcome this obstacle, NHAI has adopted the red marking system on the 11.9 kilometer long project of almost 2 kilometers. The road is covered with a raised red coating of 5-millimeter thickness which forms mild vibrations as automobiles drive on it. Such an effect of a low-level rumble automatically warns drivers and motivates them to drive slower, which enhances the safety of motorists and wildlife.
Other safety measures such as having well identified white shoulder lines on both sides of the road will ensure that vehicles do not stray off the carriageway. In addition, 25 underpasses have been embarked to enable the wild animals to move in a safe manner without compelling them to get into the highway.
It is estimated that the cost of the project is 122 crore, and it will be ready in the year 2025. According to the travelers, the road is not only safer, but it is also pleasing to the eyes because of its bright red surface that looks like a red carpet used during ceremonies.
Madhya Pradesh with 237 and 94 wildlife-road accidents and deaths respectively in the last two years.
