Madhya Pradesh, a state in central India, has a long and complex history with polio. While the state has made significant strides in eradicating the disease, several challenges remain. India has been declared polio-free by the World Health Organization (WHO) since 2014. Madhya Pradesh has not reported any cases of wild polio since 2008.
Since ensuring a stable and reliable supply of vaccines is essential for maintaining eradication efforts, in December 2023, the state government of Madhya Pradesh conducted an additional polio vaccination drive in 16 high-risk districts. This was done as part of a nationwide effort to maintain polio-free status.
While Madhya Pradesh has made significant progress in eradicating polio, it is important to remain vigilant. Continued efforts are needed to maintain high vaccination coverage, address vaccine hesitancy, and strengthen the vaccine supply chain.
