Bhopal: The government of Madhya Pradesh has put forward a request to extend Iqbal Singh Bains’ tenure, as Chief Secretary, which has been sent to the Election Commission for consideration. If approved, Bains will continue in his role. If rejected, a senior IAS officer will take over as the acting Chief Secretary. Bains is set to retire on November 29 after being granted two six-month extensions. With elections scheduled for December 3, all attention now turns to the decision on this proposal.
The selection process for the Chief Secretary in Madhya Pradesh has become a topic of discussion. This position holds importance within the administration and due to the Model Code of Conduct the final decision rests, with the Election Commission. The government’s proposal is awaiting approval. If granted, Iqbal Singh Bains will continue as Chief Secretary. However, if it is rejected, a senior IAS officer may be assigned as a replacement.
There are speculations regarding security concerns that Veera Rana, a 1988 batch IAS officer who currently serves as Chairman of the Secondary Education Board and is slated for retirement in March 2024, might be entrusted with the position of Chief Secretary.
He is the senior IAS officer right, after Iqbal Singh Bains. There are IAS officers from the 1990 batch, like Dr. Rajesh Rajoura, S.N. Mishra, and Malay Shrivastav, who are also competing for the position of Chief Secretary. As the electoral process unfolds, the decision regarding Iqbal Singh Bains’ extension and the subsequent appointment of the Chief Secretary will undoubtedly shape the administrative landscape of Madhya Pradesh.
