The first stage of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists is over and the changes have begun to emerge in the electoral arena of Madhya Pradesh. It has resulted in voters being deleted en mass, in some instances even bigger than the margin by which sitting ministers won the 2023 Assembly elections.

The loss of the name of senior BJP leader Dr Hitesh Vajpayee on the voter list is one of the remarkable ones. The deletion of his name occurred in the SIR process as a result of absenteeism. Sources indicate that Vajpayee had filed Form 8 online, requesting a change of residence, although this was done, his name was taken off the electoral lists. The relocation has sparked political debates particularly since it follows massive deletions within constituencies.

Following the initial period of SIR the situation has become clearer and it has been shown that in several segments of the Assembly there are much greater numbers of voters removed than the winning margins seen in the previous Assembly elections. This has cast doubt on the magnitude and effects of the revision exercise.

Gwalior South In Gwalior South, minister Narayan Singh Kushwah was reelected by 2,536 votes, with up to 56,552 voters reportedly being removed off the list. Minister Krishna Gaur who is the winner in the Govindpura seat in Bhopal has reached a massive majority of 1,06,668 votes but there are 97,052 voters who have been deleted.

The same trend is apparent in Bhopal Narela where minister Vishwas Sarang won after receiving 24,569 votes, whereas the voter list indicates a decline in the number of voters by 81,235. In the Indore-1 Assembly constituency, a minister, Kailash Vijayvargiya, won by 57,939 votes and 75,014 voters have been removed off the rolls.
