The district administration demolished a 20-year-old madrasa built on government land in the city’s Beedi Colony after complaints by Muslim community members. It was charged that the madrasa was built illegally on government land. Based on the complaints written against him, the district collector ordered an inquiry that confirmed that, at least partially, the structure stood on government land.
The district administration then followed the investigation with a notice to the people in charge of the madrasa to get the unauthorized construction done away with. As a result of the notice, madrasa operators themselves started the demolition work and employed labourers. But while most of the building had not been demolished, a JCB machine was deployed by the district administration, along with police forces, and in a matter of hours, their work was completed in the night.
Some members of the Muslim community had also brought to the attention of the state BJP president that the madrasa was also being conducted with illegal activities and that he must intervene to stop such things. District Collector Suresh Kumar said that the information of unauthorized construction was received by the administration, and as per verification of the land it was found to be a government property.
The notice by Tehsildar officials went on to be the standard legal procedure of which, the demolition took place. The madrasa, the collector also alleged, did not have any legal connection with the Waqf Board or any waqf property at any place. However, the demolition was not based on any religious or communal factor, he said, but because there was no legal reason for the building to exist.
Such an incident demonstrates the administration’s position against illegal encroachments in whatever institution, inside or outside, while showing an internal watch and warning relating to which could be reported and rectified in the community.
