Gwalior: The situation in Dabra tehsil of Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh is alarming as the authorities remain blind to the activities of these illicit liquor gangs. These mafias are working with young people, which has caused much havoc among the women in the area. They speak of their frustration when people say their homes are being destroyed as children come back home drunk and create marital problems. This grim reality is not an exaggeration, as the absolute control of the village known as Jatarthi has been handed over to the illegal liquor mafias. Today, the mafias are corrupting the youth and even children through the use of alcohol and other undeveloped substances.
According to the local sources, the village head, Sarpanch Poshan Singh Gurjar, has so many times registered complaints to the Bhitarwar police station about it. Nevertheless, his intentions seem unheeded as the police do not respond to his calls.
Despite the problem affecting all women in the village, many women stand out by their loud complaints about the situation. They say their homes are being ruined by the youth who return home drunk and noisy, disturbing families. Being dissatisfied with the inactivity of the authorities, presently sarpanch of attempted village Poshan Singh Gurjar decided to take some action. With this new move, he is working hard to ban the sale of alcohol in the same manner used by using suppression techniques that are traditional among the tribal societies.
The erring tribal women, along with the fashion-conscious Sarpanch, have begun to mobilize and confront the mafias by picking up concealed-away liquor bottles. They demand synergy between the regional police and the department involved in excise to address this critical matter.
The incident in Jatarthi is an eye-opener of how lives and properties could be wiped out within a mere wink of an eye due to the carelessness of administrators. It is sad to see that the liquor mafias go about performing their heinous acts without anyone questioning their effects; they are not only destroying the youth but also annihilating community values. The police department’s inaction based on this rape incident as well as similar cases indicates a dire failure in policing and social order.
