Jabalpur: Deepak Saxena, the Collector of Jabalpur, has been extremely strict with those who are underperforming and not meeting the revenue collection targets and insists on them straightening up. The poor revenue performance has led them to issue show cause notices to 10 tehsildars for the reasons for shortfall in the revenue. This comes as part of the district’s effort to fulfill its fiscal year 2024-25 goals.

According to the current figures, the district administration has fallen way short of the ₹9 crore tally that it wanted to achieve. Collector Saxena has asked the underperforming officials to give a satisfactory explanation by the next day. Consequently, the officials get slapped with strict consequences if the responses are found unsatisfactory; it can be seen that two salary increments have been stopped.

Revenue collection is vital to the administration’s operational activities, funding such essential government projects and public services. Failure to reach the target could scupper several development initiatives set to take place in the district. The objective of the collector’s action is to make the tehsildars put in even more effort and achieve the aforesaid financial targets.

Basics have been thrown at the revenue officials – including tax collection without waiting for the taxpayer, and must ensure the money flow without delay. The administration has also insisted on accountability and indicated that not performing will not be tolerated.

The deadline regarding responses now looms large, and all the eyes are keen to see how the tehsildars can justify the shortfall and manage to take appropriate steps to bridge the deficit. On its part, the district administration continues to remain steadfast in its aspirations of revenue collection and proper governance.
