Jabalpur: Approximately costing 450 crores, the new terminal building at Jabalpur Dumna Airport in Madhya Pradesh is set to be inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, February 29. Alongside this, PM Modi will virtually inaugurate other construction projects in the state. Expressing gratitude for the upcoming inauguration on February 29, Minister Rakesh Singh stated that the event includes the modernization of the new terminal building at the airport.
The state-of-the-art terminal will feature modern check-in counters, two baggage belts, elevators, escalators, modern passenger boarding bridges, firefighting and fire alarm systems, display boards, CCTV cameras, baggage scanners, a child care room, VIP lounge, a snacks bar, ATMs, medical facilities, and all public amenities. Additionally, provisions have been made for parking, accommodating 300 cars, as well as VIP and bus parking.
Apart from the new terminal building, construction work has been carried out for the ATC tower, technical block, and fire station. Furthermore, the existing 1988-meter runway has undergone maintenance and extension, resulting in a 2750-meter runway. This extension facilitates the smooth landing of larger aircraft like the A320/321. With this, there will be no issues in night landings. The 2750-meter runway is now the state’s second-longest, while Indore Airport boasts the longest runway at 2754 meters, followed by Bhopal Airport with a runway length of 2744 meters.
Minister Rakesh Singh shared that when he was first elected from Jabalpur to the Lok Sabha in 2004, Jabalpur was often referred to as a big village. The lack of robust connectivity was a significant challenge at the time. He emphasized the importance of air connectivity in addressing these challenges, especially given the condition of the airstrip in Jabalpur back then.
He highlighted that after becoming a Member of Parliament, efforts were initiated to improve connectivity. The introduction of regular flights by Air Deccan in Jabalpur marked the beginning of air connectivity in the region. Subsequently, discussions with airlines such as SpiceJet, Kingfisher, Alliance Air, IndiGo, and Zoom led to the commencement of flights connecting Jabalpur directly to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Bilaspur.
