Indore: The recent heavy traffic jam on the Indore Dewas highway, which was very unfortunate as it resulted in the death of two individuals, has now landed before the Madhya Pradesh High Court. During a hearing concerning the public interest litigation (PIL), the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) made a shocking and controversial remark that has gathered criticism and concern among people.

In the hearing, Justice Vivek Rusia and Justice Amarnath Dwiwedi are presiding, and the NHAI legal representative asked a strange question in the court- “Why should people go to the highway so far?”
The statement seemed to blame the people for causing the lethal jam instead of looking at the infrastructural problems or even the poor management of affairs that caused the traffic mayhem.

The social activist Anand Adhikari, represented by senior advocate Girish Patwardhan, filed the PIL in which the move of NHAI to abscond responsibility was highly condemned. The hearing raised major concerns regarding the road conditions and safety of the people, considering the loss of lives owing to such a mismanagement of traffic and failure to take action at the right time.

Agency watchers and legal analysts are also wondering why such an important agency would have to make such an insensitive and disregarding claim in court when it has a clear role to play in facilitating the safe and smooth road travel. The attitude of the NHAI not only alarmed the common people but also caused concern regarding the integrity of the government in the running of the governmental infrastructure.

The High Court has now responded by issuing notices to all authorities concerned and has also asked them to come up with detailed responses. The case once again outlines the urgency of improved planning, emergency planning, and human-focused work of such agencies as NHAI.
