Jabalpur: Facing protest, Khandwa BJP MLA Kanchan Tanve has been fined ₹ 50,000 by order from the Madhya Pradesh High Court sitting in Jabalpur. High Court Justice G.S. Ahluwalia’s single bench directed that the sum be paid into the High Court registry within a week. The fine was imposed after the incident in which Congress candidate Kundan Malviya petitioned the poll panel.
In its subject matter, this case involves an election petition brought by Kundan Malviya, a Congress candidate who lost to his rival in the assembly elections. Concerning the petition, observers claimed that information on Kanchan Tanve’s caste certificate was misrepresented. In the petition, Malviya seeks the annulling of Tanve’s election and ordering a new election into the seat. When Tanve appeared before the Jabalpur High Court on Tuesday, she was absent; hence, the fine was imposed.
Last year, Kanchan Mukesh Tanve stood in the Assembly elections of the Madhya Pradesh constituency in Indian on the ticket of the BJP. While being nominated, she produced a caste certificate for the returning officer. However, it contained her husband’s name, Mukesh Tanve, instead of her father’s name, which is not allowed. Congress candidate Kundan Malviya lodged the complaint with the Election Commission and approached Jabalpur High Court in January 2024 to seek the cancellation of the election.
Perhaps it is important to mention that Kanchan Mukesh Tanve also got acquainted with similar problems while running for the district panchayat elections. At that time, the returning officer had given her a show cause notice to the effect that her caste certificate was wrong. Tanve replied to this by filing an affidavit stating that he did not have time to rectify the document and later turned it in to the district panchayat president. Again, when she contested the assembly elections, she produced the same caste certificate, which was incorrect. It became a concern because, despite the fact that the woman is married and has a husband, her father’s name was replaced by that of her husband, contrary to the usual culture.
