Gwalior: The monsoon has started in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh of India, in terms of onset. On the other hand, the municipal corporation expressed that they are already spending crores of rupees for cleaning all small and big drains in the municipal area. However, the situation remains unchanged as the drains in the city are still in a bad state even after such a huge expenditure. Therefore, these ventures have also become part of the mutinous corruption scandals at the municipal level. Every year, for cleaning 432 drains of varying capacities, the Gwalior Municipal Corporation releases about 5 crore rupees. However, real scenes of drain cleaning can be depicted through photos of dirty blockage in the drain.
The bad weather requires the city to prepare itself after July for an active monsoon period. But then, after coming back to Gwalior, we get that even an hour of rainfall turns hundreds of areas into dumpyards. With millions of rupees spent every year on the water logging issue, little has turned out to be coming out of it except that the residents continue to suffer from the problem.
Similarly, eleven years ago, under the ADIBI project, for the installation of drainage systems in the City Center and Padav areas, 30 crore rupees were earmarked. But now, all these lines are non-operational, thus increasing the city’s vulnerability to waterlogging even in light rainfall situations. The municipal commissioner opines that the drain cleaning operations are in progress, but the outcomes from such processes are rather dubitable.
It is strange and worrying that heavy rains are possible in the next few days, and if the authorities do not directly correct this state, the city can lose millions plus potential harm to its inhabitants.
