Narsimhapur: This is the current situation of counting the votes for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections at the district headquarters in Madhya Pradesh. The electoral commission started by tallying the votes from the voters’ ballot papers and then tabulating the EVM machines’ votes.
The EVM machines in Narsinghpur district have raised voices of questions by the Congress party. The unrest started in the Gadarwara Assembly constituency, where Congress party workers demanded an explanation of the EVM machines because they were tampered with. Instead of participating in the counting of votes, they resorted to voicing their protests against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Congress members failed to protest further for their say and were chased away from the counting site by the district authorities. There were also reports in the media about some workers of the Congress party being arrested by the police.
The usage of EVMs in Indian elections remains a contentious issue that has led to these occurrences, as illustrated by this case. Specifically, the Congress party has made past complaints regarding actions with the EVMs, which they have described as easily temperable and not at all transparent. These concerns have again emerged in Narsinghpur, which led to more political formulas during the vote counting.
The Election Commission of India has always emphatically reassured the public on the issue of EVMs as highly secure, invulnerable, and sealed against meddling. However, the political mobilizations persist, and the fear of its negative impact on local politics remains a reality, as in the case of Narsinghpur.
While waiting for the total number of votes cast to be totaled, what is important is to follow all legal procedures on the voting exercise. The district authorities and the Election Commission are trying to sort out the issues in this regard and ensure that the law and order situation at the counting places remains calm.
