Authorities in Madhya Pradesh have reportedly arrested a doctor in Chhindwara district after 11 children died from consuming contaminated cough syrup.
The doctor who is identified as Praveen Soni, is alleged to have prescribed the Coldrif syrup to several children, most of whom were treated at his clinic in Parasia, according to a media report. The complaint stated that several children under five years of age died after being given the cough syrup, which laboratory tests later found to contain diethylene glycol (DEG), a poisonous chemical commonly used in antifreeze and brake fluids.
Earlier in the day, police registered an FIR against Dr. Soni and the operators of Sresun Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Coldrif syrup. The case was filed under Section 27(A) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Sections 105 and 276 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), following a complaint by Ankit Sahlam, Block Medical Officer of Parasia Community Health Centre.
