Digvijaya Singh, the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and senior Congress leader, has politically attacked the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), citing the much-publicized Ladli Behna Yojana by the state government as the subject of attack. Singh also cast doubt on the real value that the monthly 1,250 provided to women under the scheme is really doing any good, and whether this amount can really help them deal with their financial problems.
Going to social media, Singh posted that there is a great clamour about the 1,250 being given, yet, as a matter of fact, it is not coming out of the personal purse of the BJP leaders. In confronting the increasing costs of education, health care, and basic commodities, he claimed that this money is a mere drop in the ocean. This allowance, according to him, is symbolic and not sufficient compared to the actual cost of living of women and their families.
Singh was also addressing the RSS and specifically the head of the organization, Dr. Mohan Bhagwat. He also asked why women could not get treatment in private hospitals using only 1,250, or why they would not be able to treat their children to malnutrition by providing them with nutritious food. He also questioned whether this would be sufficient to cover an electricity bill, not to mention the long-term provision of relief.
In bringing up these issues, Digvijaya Singh attempted to bring out the distinction between populist action and actual welfare. He opined that although the Ladli Behna scheme is being touted as a game-changer with regard to empowering women, in the actual sense, it is not capable of solving structural problems like the high cost of healthcare, the high cost of education, and escalating inflation. His sarcastic comments are in line with the Congress plan of questioning the Congress strategy of confronting the BJP’s welfare politics on the basis of lapses between the promises and real effects, and keeping the impending electoral battles in mind.
