Political turbulence is increasing in the Shivpuri Municipal Council in Madhya Pradesh, as not everything is going well in the local body. A twist on it is equally surprising because the opposition party councillors are not giving trouble to the current Chairperson, Gayatri Sharma, but instead her own party members. The tension that has culminated in this state has been long in the making, and it was two months ago that more than 22 of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillors came out openly to question her leadership.
These councillors have now made an application to District Collector Ravindra Chaudhary, and formally requested that they be allowed to file a no-confidence motion against Sharma. This has required them to call a council meeting as soon as possible to deliberate and decide on the motion. Once the meeting is accepted, the political arena in Shivpuri is likely to experience a lot of drama and a power shift.
Ruling BJP leader Gayatri Sharma has been the chairperson of the Shivpuri Municipal Council with a tenure of close to three years. Nevertheless, some councillors at a party to which she belongs have come out to accuse her of financial and ethical malpractices in her tenure. There have been accusations of massive corruption, misappropriation of municipal funds, and a total disregard for democratic processes.
Councilor Ramji Vyas, whose wife is Municipal Vice President and a BJP leader, also confirmed these allegations by saying that the administration of Sharma has not adhered to the transparency and integrity sources of governance. To the dissenting councillors, repeated efforts to raise these issues internally have been overlooked, and they have been forced to invoke formal mechanisms of escalating the issue.
This insurrection among the local BJP leadership is regarded as a huge blow to the party, which could prove to influence its popularity in future civic and state elections that are approaching. Should this no-confidence motion succeed, then it may mean the end of the term of Sharma and result in a big reshuffling of the power base of the municipal council.
