The Congress has initiated a drama-filled campaign against BJP’s tribal affairs minister Vijay Shah for his remarks linked to Col. Sofiya Qureshi in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district. After noting that Shah has not been seen recently, Vivek Khandelwal, the President of the Indore District Congress Sewa Dal, has posted posters around the city promising up to ₹11,000 to anyone who has information on the minister’s whereabouts.
“According to these posters, Shah has been avoiding cabinet meetings and not appearing in public since he made his statement on May 12. These posters are up because the minister is nowhere around. He is expected to shoulder responsibility for his words and step down. For that reason, the protest will continue for the time being,” he said.
The dispute started after Shah said something at an event in Mhow that was seen as targeting Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. He said that by using the same terrorists responsible for the April 22 Pahalgam attack, India taught them a lesson using their own sister. Even though Kiyani did not call anyone out, many interpreted his remarks as being about Col. Qureshi, who had spoken with the media.
Many people in the country felt outraged after he spoke. An FIR was filed against Shah after the Madhya Pradesh High Court took note of the matter on its own. Matters worsened after the Supreme Court scolded the minister and told a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the incident.
While the situation gets more serious, Congress members insist Shah should resign and promise to protest until there is action.
