Bhopal: The case through which a controversial remark made by the Tribal Welfare Minister of the state of Madhya Pradesh against the senior Indian Army officer Colonel Sophia Qureshi has resulted in a hearing, and this hearing is to be conducted by the Madhya Pradesh High Court today. The issue received weighted attention after the High Court took suo motu cognizance of Shah’s remarks, and his statements were not only insulting to the officer concerned but also derogatory and dangerous for the armed forces in general.

After the High Court intervened, a First Information Report was lodged late Wednesday night at 11 PM at the Manpur police station of the Mhow tehsil, in Indore district. It was this FIR that was filed by the state government on the order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Minister Vijay Shah made the controversial comments at an event in Raykunda village, Ambedkar Nagar, Mhow, in the middle of this week. The division bench of Justice Atul Sreedharan and Justice Anuradha Shukla condemned the language used by Shah. The court had no option but to act in the wake of the firmness of the remarks of the minister against a senior army officer, Colonel Sophia Qureshi.

Earlier on the court had directed the case to be given priority listing, and the Advocate General Prashant Singh was to ensure that an FIR was mandatorily registered. In compliance, there were quick interventions by the authorities on court directives.

On the other hand, a petition that the Minister of Vijay Shah has filed before the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the High Court in a bid to dispose of his petition has been heard by the court in an urgent manner. He has asked the apex court to keep the High Court’s orders in abeyance and to seek refuge from the proceedings instigated against him in the FIR.

The case continues to create political and legal jitters with the judiciary insisting on accountability, even when they hold ministerial positions.
