Gwalior: Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav will go through an inspection at the JC Mill of Gwalior before flying out of the airport.
When his visit, he will also be able to hold meetings with the JC Mill Workers’ Union. The JC Mill, originally belonging to Birla Brothers, has been shut down for operations since it shut down in 1998. But the legal battle continues over unpaid dues to the 8037 past employees of the mill. Even today, employees are paid about Rs. 80 crore salary.
JC Mill of Nagda commenced in 1923 as a textile mill for manufacturing textile products The land for the establishment of the mill was provided by Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia of The Scindia State, who contributed over 700 bighas of the land for establishment of the mill for Ghanshyam Dass Birla. At its peak, the mill used state-of-the-art equipment that required almost 16000 workers to handle textiles and manufacture huge machinery.
This closure, however, was a slow process; the liquidation continued from 1992 to 1998. During this period, some of the assets of the mill were disposed of and approximately Rs. 26 crore was received. From this amount, approximately Rs. 13 crore was shared among the workers so, still Rs. 80 crore is due for the workers.
The workers of JC Mill, specifically through unionism, have time and again pressured the government to ensure that employees receive the balances. Thus, there is hope for some improvement from the state government after Dr. Mohan Yadav comes to power. This important question will be heard, and ways will be found to relieve the former workers and pay them for unwaged labor.
For many, the dues make up more than the economic reward, but work reward, justice after a long working period. The Chief Minister’s inspection may go a long way in taking the necessary measures to end this problem and bring much-needed relief to the families suffering.
