Bhopal: It was a big sensation in the city of Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, following a night raid by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the home of a former railway loco pilot. The raid was conducted on the night of June 19 when the CBI officials went to the residence of Ashok Sharma, a former loco pilot in the Indian Railways, and conducted a thorough search procedure.
After the raid, the CBI filed a case against Ashok Sharma under the concerned sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act for holding assets that were not in proportion to his known sources. CBI office officials indicate that Sharma was caught with assets that were more than half (63%) of the amount he declared as his income. This was a huge disparity that raised serious concerns of financial anomalies and missing income during his time as a government worker.
The main agency has started a thorough investigation process to find out where Sharma got her extra assets. All other possible sources of revenue other than his formal salary will be investigated by the probe. This will also cover potential earnings through real estate, investments, a family-owned company or any hidden partnerships.
This move by CBI is also part of an extensive move to stop the vice of corruption and introduce transparency in the system, and in particular, government officials who served their country and might have exploited their office. According to sources, the financial documents, the bank records, the property records, and other personal and professional assets of Sharma are now coming under the scanner of the agency to reveal how much more disproportionate wealth Sharma holds.
Not only has this incident raised eyebrows in the railway department, but it has also found a fertile talking point among the different departments on the matter of post-retirement financial scrutiny. The case shows the increased level of alertness of anti-corruption agencies in India and puts a strong warning of the bad use of office held in the government.
