In Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh, the authorities have initiated a large-scale crackdown of the hazardous illegal coal mining activities, destroying a few of the underground tunnel-like structures which are dangerous to both lives and properties. This was a move that was implemented in Batoura and Tikuritola locations within the Amlai police station boundaries where such unaffiliated mining had been practiced long enough.
These illegal mines were excavated deep underground and in the shape of narrow tunnels that were cavity like, making them highly dangerous. Authorities cautioned the structures were so weak that any collapse might happen at any moment and threaten the miners, residents and even the livestock. The incident had become a concern among residents on numerous occasions forcing the administration to take decisive action.
The police and South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) teams in a combined effort employed heavy machinery such as JCB excavator to seal and destroy at least five of such underground tunnels. The area also had open pits that were filled to avoid further accidents and to make sure that people are safe.
According to the authorities, the same was done previously but illegal mining activities would still be undertaken as mafias dug new tunnels. This same problem compelled authorities to make more stringent enforcement efforts once again.
The administration has promised that they will keep on with the observation of the area to avoid such operations being revived. The crackdown shows the continued difficulties in stopping illegal mining activities at the expense of protecting the environment and safety in the area.
