A major political controversy has erupted in Madhya Pradesh after nearly 500 tonnes of wheat were found allegedly stored in a Bhagwati Warehouse linked to BJP MLA Vishnu Khatri just prior to the state government’s wheat procurement season. The stock of wheat was discovered at the warehouse after it was reported to the authorities and then an administrative team was sent to the location to begin an investigation.
The timing of the discovery raises significant concerns because wheat procurement within the state has yet to begin. Opposition leaders, namely Jaivardhan Singh, have launched concerted attacks against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and have made claims that there is a larger conspiracy against farmers. He claimed that significant amounts of wheat are being stored in warehouses connected to BJP leaders while the farmers are being forced to sell their produce.
Additionally, Singh alleged that procurement dates were being deliberately delayed, which put small farmers in a position of selling their crops at a price much lower than the Minimum Support Price (MSP). He stated that the situation provided undue benefit to private stockists and placed farmers who need immediate cash after harvest in a critical financial situation.
Compounding the controversy surrounding the wheat discovered in Bhagwati Warehouse was the fact that it had already been designated a government procurements centre for this season, thereby raising concerns surrounding transparency, fairness, and the possible misuse of the procurement system.
