The issue of internal tensions in the Madhya Pradesh BJP came out again in the district of Damoh indicating the growing rift in the local leadership. The ruckus over the issue started off on Wednesday when a meeting was held at the BJP district office with Hatta MLA Umadevi Khatik openly accusing two ministers in her government of meddling in the affairs of her constituency. Her abrupt and scathing comments, uttered directly in front of the district in-charge minister Inder Singh Parmar, startled the party bosses who were at the event.
Khatik claimed that two ministers of the district have been constantly interfering in her district. She was also making a big threat when she said to them, in case the ministers ceased meddling with Hatta, they could get up and establish their own office there. I will resign.” She never named the ministers specifically but through her indirect remarks many people knew who she was accusing.
Feeling the tension building up, Minister Parmar intervened and defused the situation. He used the unity of the party and said, we are one big family and that we will settle these issues internal to the party. This should not repeat in the future.
In the meantime, the Minister of State of Culture, Tourism and Religious Affairs Dharmendra Singh Lodhi denied the claims as he addressed the press. He denied the charges with laughter, and replied, that I should ask the MLA herself whether I ever meddled with her work. His answer, which he gave with a smile on his face, was viewed as an obvious way of trying to keep himself out of the controversy in a way that was perceived as an effort to distance himself. Even the MLA Khatik later diluted her position by saying, It is a family affair. I spoke out in anger.”
The outcry by MLA has brought about political buzz in Damoh though. The local observers and party workers believe that the incident is not just the manifestation of personal annoyance, they see that it could be the hint of a prolonged power game determining the district politics.
