Bhopal: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been summoned by a Bhopal court and asked to appear before it on August 28. The notice concerns a defamation suit initiated against him by Kartikey Singh Chouhan, son of senior BJP leader and earlier Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Earlier, the court had called Rahul Gandhi to appear on May 9th, but he failed to appear. As a result, the court has now fixed a new date and given a new notice to attend his appearance on the 28th of August.
The case is going back to the 2018 Madhya Pradesh Assembly Elections. In a campaign rally at Jhabua, Rahul Gandhi has said that Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his son Kartikey were part and parcel of the Panama Papers leak, where the beneficiaries of offshore financial dealings all over the world were mentioned.
After the craze, Rahul Gandhi withdrew his remarks against Shivraj Singh Chouhan and stood his ground on Kartikey Chouhan. Kartikey, however, rejected the allegation altogether as completely false and defamatory. He subsequently sought to file a defamation suit against Rahul Gandhi, and alleged that the statement had affected his reputation and had been made with the intent of misleading the public for political gains.
The Bhopal court is now handling the case, and Rahul Gandhi is likely to appear in person to answer accusations in the next hearing. The issue continues to attract the attention of politicians, with implications for both parties and high-profile individuals. As the law plays out, the eyes of the world will be on how the Congress leader responds and how the court will guide them for the next few months.
