The dissatisfaction of workers on a contractual basis in Madhya Pradesh is again going to the streets, with the thousands ready to take part in an enormous protest in Bhopal. In the present day, employees on contract basis all over the state will assemble at Ambedkar Park where they will have a mass demonstration. The agitation is being mobilised in the name of the Samvida Sanyukt Sangharsh Manch Madhya Pradesh that has alleged that over 2.5 lakh of the contractual workers will join this statewide movement.
The workers have drafted a nine point list of demands that will cover long outstanding problems like job regularisation, elimination of pay gaps, introduction of equal pay equal work, pension benefits and service security. The state convenor of the union says that successive negotiations with the government have not been bearing any tangible fruit. The employees claim that they have had no other choice but to protest with no firm assurances at sight.
The protest will start at 10 a.m., and employees will gather at Ambedkar Park and start a sit-in which, according to them, will last until their demands are heard and followed. It is a protest that should attract the involvement of the different departments such as health, education, administration, and technical services, which are sectors that have high reliance on contractual manpower.
The high attendance in the protest site is one of the reasons why police have overdone security arrangements around the protest site to expect a high number of people to attend the protest and possible traffic disruptions in the area. Barricades have been established and more staff employed to keep the order.
This protest puts the state government in a very difficult situation, particularly when there have been constant debates concerning labour reforms and efficiency of the public services. Now it is time to watch the response of the administration in reaction to this massive mobilisation. It will depend on whether the government will kickstart another round of negotiations or act in its present interest.
