Morena: There was a tragic incident which happened at the district hospital in Morena, Madhya Pradesh, when a fire broke out, in which an asthma patient was killed. The sudden fire caused chaos, warranting all hospital staff to evacuate patients away from the affected ward. An asthma patient died during this emergency transfer, when, due to the unavailability of oxygen support, he succumbed to death.

He had been admitted to the hospital a day before the incident but was declared deceased, identified as Birendra Kadere from Chhonda village. He choked to death in part because there was no oxygen in the one area of the aircraft he had been cleared to evacuate, because he was somewhere there, his family members said. The hospital administration had been accused of gross negligence by them for having deliberately pulled down the oxygen supply line on the orders of the Civil Surgeon, Dr. Gajendra Tomar.

A social media video of the incident has emerged in which Dr. Tomar is said to be ordering the staff to shut down the oxygen line. The same video shows plasters on the limbs of orthopaedic patients who drag themselves out of the ward, while seen on some of the family members are carrying patients on their shoulders desperately to save them.

Many people are outraged as this has showcased the hospital’s capabilities for emergencies. A cut off of an essential service like oxygen in the middle of a fire emergency has prompted serious concern over the standard of care and safety protocols at the facility.

Hospital administration has not yet replied to the allegations of the victim’s family as of now. Given how bad the situation is in this case, a probe will be launched by authorities, but the damage is done and it shows how bad the healthcare infrastructure and crisis management are in public hospitals.
