Gwalior: Today marks the grand celebration of Mahashivratri, with devotees immersed in profound devotion. In Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, the ancient Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple, standing for over 300 years, is witnessing a surge of devotees from midnight. Pilgrims, both local and from other states, are thronging the temple to seek the blessings of Lord Achaleshwar.

On the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri, the special Mahabhishek of Lord Achalanath took place at 4:00 AM, accompanied by elaborate adornments. The temple administration arranged a special offering of fifty-six bhogs for the deity, adding a divine touch to the festivities. Devotees are now receiving the divine darshan of Lord Achaleshwar, making this celebration even more joyous.

The uniqueness of Achaleshwar Mahadev lies not only in its religious significance but also in a centuries-old fascinating tale. Believed to be a self-manifested Shiva Linga, Achaleshwar Mahadev emerged approximately 750 years ago. Over time, a small temple was erected at the site. During the reign of the Sindhia dynasty, Gwalior became the capital, and Maharajbada was constructed to facilitate royal affairs. Along the route from Maharajbada to Jai Vilas Mahal, a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was situated beneath a tree.

When the rulers decided to relocate the small temple, attempting to shift the Shiva Linga proved futile. The linga refused to budge, and even the elephants, used in the effort, could not move it. Despite the king’s persistent attempts, including using chains and elephants, the linga remained steadfast. Eventually, exhausted and defeated, the king’s generals returned to the palace.

That night, the king had a vision where Lord Shiva appeared, advising him not to disturb the linga, stating, ‘I am unmovable here; do not attempt to relocate me.’ The following day, the king narrated the incident to his courtiers. Accepting the divine message, he ordered the construction of a grand temple at the site, now known as Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple.

Today, this sacred shrine continues to attract devotees who, in their deep devotion, recount this glorious story of Lord Achaleshwar, adding to the sanctity of Mahashivratri celebrations in Gwalior.
