According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area has now formed near the Odisha coast in the Northwest Bay of Bengal, leading the state government to alert all district heads. A cyclonic circulation in the Northwest and adjoining West central Bay of Bengal caused the system which was detected around 8:30 AM IST on May 27.

As a result, the Special Relief Commissioner’s office sent an advisory to all 30 collectors in Odisha. Offical instructions ordered those responsible to organize efforts and prepare for the chance of any heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms or strong wind conditions. It also asked district collectors to immediately send reports whenever there are damages from storms.

The IMD reported that the low-pressure system should strengthen further and head north slowly over the following 48 hours. Upper-air winds moving in a loop over the region have now reached mid-tropospheric altitudes and are helping the system to develop.

In their Tuesday report, the IMD predicted that 15 districts in Odisha will see thunderstorms, lightning and gusty surface winds of 30 to 40 kmph during the afternoon and evening hours. People in orange and yellow-alert districts should be especially alert and it’s wise for everyone to take shelter during a thunderstorm to avoid being struck by lightning.

The official note advised officials from the fishing sector to ensure fishermen adhere to safety measures and avoid sailing into the sea with the current weather. The state government is keeping a close eye on things as the system develops.
