On Monday, two pilgrims died and six were injured in a tragic Kedarnath national highway landslide incident, officials said. This happened at 7:34 am around Munkatiya, a village between Sonprayag and Gaurikunda. Rocks and boulders fell down the hill and hit a car passing by on the road. Two of the passengers, Rita and Chandra Singh, of Barkot in the Uttarkashi district, had been killed on the spot.

Six other occupants in the vehicle were injured, with two said to be in critical condition. The wounded, Mohit Chauhan, Naveen Singh Rawat, Pratibha, Mamata, Rajeshwari, and Pankaj, all of Uttarkashi, were at once taken to a government hospital at Sonprayag. Two patients who were critically injured were then transported to a better medical centre to get special attention. The information about the accident and the relief efforts was verified by the Rudraprayag district Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar.

This tragic incident occurred during a time of heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand, which has led to several casualties and rampant havoc in the state. Only the day before, there were two murders in different rain-related cases in Tehri and Pithoragarh districts. In another incident on August 29, landslides due to heavy rains and cloudbursts in various districts such as Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri, and Bageshwar claimed the lives of six people and left 11 more missing. The monsoon has struck the area several times, leading to flash floods, landslides, and structural damage, including the Tharali catastrophe on August 23 and flash flooding along the Kheer Ganga River on August 5.

The army and other officials have been deployed in the affected regions to carry out a rescue mission. Sixty-nine individuals are still missing as a result of the recent disasters. As the monsoon persists, authorities have advised people and pilgrims to be highly cautious during their travels in the prone regions, particularly on high-risk highways like Kedarnath.
