Kolkata: On Monday, the Kolkata police released some horrific details about the attacker, Sanjay Roy, who raped and killed a woman postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This incident, which befell the city in the wee hours of the Friday, has elicited a series of investigations.
Sanjay Roy, a volunteer working for Kolkata police, was arrested and bailed under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (Murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He was taken into 14 days of police remand on a Saturday. The incident occurred between 3 AM and 6 AM on Friday on the third floor of the hospital within a seminar hall where the victim was taken to have a nap.
Further investigations disclosed the following gruesome facts of Roy’s conduct after the deed. He had been a regular visitor, and as such, having a record of his visit through the CCTV may prove something beyond doubt. Later, at the crime scene, there were blood stains and Roy’s Bluetooth headphones, which became the key point of identification of the suspects.
After the nasty act, Roy went back to his house and is said to have slept for some hours. He washed his clothes in a bid to destroy any evidence that may be found against him, but the police found blood stains on his shoes. Furthermore, officers discovered at the scene of the arrest obscene material in the smartphone of Roy.
Later, in the post-mortem report which they made and handed over to the bereaved family, it was clear that it was not suicide because the deceased was badly severely injured. From the report, it emerged that the woman was bleeding from the eyes, and the private parts beside her body were being shredded. The right cervical vertebra was fractured – the first blow was delivered to strangle the woman, followed by smothering. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal said that they follow all the procedures as per the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court.
