Kolkata: On Wednesday, at a cultural event in Kolkata, a temporary gate buckled and injured two people. The event at the Dhanadhanya Auditorium was attended by West Bengal’s Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee. A news agency informed that the Information & Cultural Affairs Department organized the event to celebrate the 44th death anniversary of the legendary actor of Indian cinema Uttam Kumar.

It arose when people were still entering the hall thus causing a lot of confusion. Police officers responded quicker by calling other first aid services to the affected persons and rushed them to nearby hospitals. Their severity is still undisclosed. However, it was reported that they are not critical at the moment.

Such an event was a grand event, meant to pay tribute to the great actor that Uttam Kumar was and remains to the people of Bengal. This has triggered debates concerning the measures that were in place to prevent both gate collapse as well as crowd control in such events. Some people are, in a way, still trying to find out what led to the collapse in order to avoid it in the future.

The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, who was also in attendance, condemned the act and urged associations holding social events to tighten up on the safety measures taken. The organizers have been requested to submit their report on the mishap and also, measures that should be put in place to avoid the eventuality in future.

The Dhanadhanya Auditorium, which is used to host various cultural events, will probably redesign its security regime in this regard. It proceeded with a break briefly to address the issue before the organizers made arrangements to ensure the rest of the people in attendance were safe.
