Kolkata: Two days after the Supreme Court’s warning, the doctors who are on strike protesting against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have agreed to negotiate with the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. The protestors had previously disregarded the Supreme Court order, which asked them to call off their strike and get back to work. The court had warned the doctors and set a deadline, but the doctors took to protesting again on Tuesday, demanding their demands be met.

It should also be noted the main requirements of the protesting doctors – are justice for the girl and punishment for those who hid the crime. The two have not kept quiet about their displeasure of the investigation process and demanded immediate action. This unfortunate incident has elicited a lot of concerns among healthcare workers, and the demonstrations have greatly affected the provision of healthcare services in the region.

Against the backdrop of the protests, the protesting doctors have now stated their readiness to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in what perhaps could be the end of the doctors’ strike. The protesting group’s main spokesperson, Doctor Aniket Mandal, said to a news agency that they are willing to address their grievances directly to the CM. ‘To ensure we memorize the government’s stand we will communicate to the CM office writing a lit of our grievances We demand to be granted a meeting with the Chief Minister and highlight the issues at hand. ’

The doctors’ decision to approach her may positively transform the situation since the ongoing strike has affected the various healthcare services in Kolkata. Nevertheless, the air is still charged as the medical fraternity stands prepared to demand justice for the victim and force authorities to investigate the alleged cover-up.
