Cong leader Mallikarjun Kharge gave a warning in an emotional speech to the long-serving Congress Working Committee (CWC) in Patna, warning that an anti-democratic plot is being orchestrated nationwide to deny millions of voters, particularly Dalits, Adivasis, backward and ultra-backward classes, minorities, and the economically weak, the democratic right to voice. He said that vote theft is a mere euphemism to rob the rations, pensions, medicines, scholarships, and even the future of the children belonging to the most marginalised sections, citing the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll as a model of what might happen in the rest of the country.

Kharge urged a new adherence to election protocol by pointing out that the government has already started to undermine the credibility of people through its constant interference with voters’ lists. He cautioned that the impartiality of the Election Commission has become questionable and that the demand of the Election Commission to be provided with affidavits instead of being given transparent responses aggravates the situation. This is the first CWC meeting to be held in Bihar since independence and a worthy decision considering its glorious history of democracy.

The long-term politician also spoke a word about the reservation policy, and reminded the audience that a 69 percent reservation scheme in Tamil Nadu was constitutionally guaranteed by the Congress government 30 years ago. He noted that the practice was not observed in Bihar, where a 65 per cent reservation bill remains in limbo even after its enactment by the state legislature. “Why has the Prime Minister not afforded constitutional sanction to the 65 percent reservation of Bihar?” Kharge enquired, making a comparison with the previous editorial of Yogi Adityanath, which condemned the reservation. The cabinet of the chief minister of UP is now prohibiting rallies in the name of caste-based discrimination, which is ironical and difficult to overlook.

Lastly, Kharge denounced the BJP’s perception of Nitish Kumar, the Bihar chief minister and one of the BJP’s partners. Our internal coalition processes are breaking apart, and it appears that the BJP has now regarded Kumar as a burden as opposed to a real friend, he cautioned. Full of indictments and demands of constitutional protection, the speech of the congressman was a call to keep democratic standards and secure the political rights of the most vulnerable citizens of India.
