Strong winds with heavy rains lashed some areas in Kerala on Saturday, causing isolated cases of property damage and uprooting of trees in different districts. The rains, which started late on Friday night, persisted on Saturday, disrupting normal life, particularly in high-altitude regions of northern districts.

According to the local residents in the affected areas, the constant falling of trees was due to the constant rains, especially in hilly areas. A house in the coastal village of Perumathura in Thiruvananthapuram was also damaged in one incident as the strong wind blew away the tin roof, highlighting the fury of the weather conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert to five districts in Kerala’s north, Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in those places. Red alert indicates more than 20 cm of rainfall in a period of 24 hours, and it may cause floods and landslides in prone areas.

Besides the red alert, the IMD also issued an orange alert in six districts- Palakkad, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta- which is a forecast of very heavy rainfall of between 11 cm and 20 cm of rain. In the meantime, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha were put under yellow alert, signalling 6 cm to 11 cm of rainfall.

The government has encouraged citizens in the damaged areas to be on high alert, especially those residing in lowlands and areas prone to landslides. Disaster response units have been on alert, and fishermen have been warned not to go into the sea because of the bad weather conditions.

As the monsoon becomes more active across Kerala, the state authorities are keeping a close watch on the developments and maintaining communication with the IMD to have real-time weather data to minimise the risks and save lives.
